Mitral Valve Repair

Mitral valve repair is a surgical procedure used to fix a damaged or leaky mitral valve, which controls blood flow between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart. It is commonly performed to treat mitral regurgitation, where blood leaks backward due to improper valve closure. Surgeons may reshape the valve, repair or replace valve leaflets, or insert an annuloplasty ring to reinforce the valve's structure. Mitral valve repair is often preferred over replacement because it preserves the patient’s own valve and typically results in better heart function and fewer long-term complications.
