Causes
Why did it happen?
-
Mitral valve disease is a leading cause of the need for valve repair, often presenting as either mitral regurgitation or mitral stenosis. In mitral regurgitation, the valve does not close properly, causing blood to leak backward into the left atrium. This improper sealing disrupts normal blood flow, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath and fatigue.
-
Mitral valve prolapse is another form of mitral valve dysfunction, where the valve's leaflets bulge or "prolapse" into the left atrium during contraction. This causes blood to flow backward into the atrium, further exacerbating heart strain and contributing to potential complications.
-
Both conditions impair the heart's ability to efficiently pump blood, often necessitating surgical intervention to repair or replace the valve.
