A Short Description Of The Heart Functions

  • The heart is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body, ensuring that organs receive the oxygen and nutrients they need to functions.

  • The aorta, the main artery, plays a critical role in this process. From the aorta, smaller arteries branch off, much like the root of a plant with its many root hairs.

  • These smaller arteries are responsible for delivering oxygen-rich blood to the heart, which then pumps it to all other parts of the body.

What has gone wrong?

  • A buildup of plaque (fat) in one of these arteries can create a blockage, preventing blood from flowing through it properly.

  • This blockage restricts the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart, which can interfere with its ability to function effectively.

How is it fixed?

  • To restore blood flow to the heart, surgeons take a healthy blood vessel from the leg, chest, or arm and use it to bypass the blocked artery, creating a new pathway for blood to flow.

  • This improves blood circulation to the heart and enhances its function. There are several types of bypass surgeries: traditional, off-pump, and minimally invasive.

  •  In traditional surgery, the heart is temporarily stopped, and a heart-lung machine takes over its functions.

  • Off-pump surgery, however, allows the heart to continue beating while a mechanical device takes over certain tasks.

  • In minimally invasive surgery, a smaller incision is made, and the bone is not cut, allowing the heart to remain beating.
