Recovery

How does the recovery of a mitral valve repair look like?

  • The typical initial recovery period for mitral valve repair surgery is approximately four to eight weeks. During this time, patients are encouraged to gradually increase their activity levels.

  • Walking is a simple and effective way to improve circulation and help regain strength. Begin by walking short distances and aim to gradually increase your walking distance each day to build endurance.

  •  For the first three months, it is important to avoid activities that could strain your chest or upper arm muscles, such as lifting heavy objects or pushing yourself too hard during exercise. This period of caution helps prevent complications and allows the body to heal properly.

  • During the initial recovery period, you may feel tired and sore as your body adjusts. It's normal to experience some brief, sharp pains in the chest, especially around the incision site. These pains are typically temporary and should subside as healing progresses. If pain persists or worsens, it is important to contact your healthcare provider for advice. Always follow your surgeon’s specific post-surgical guidelines for the best recovery outcome.
