Recovery

How does the recovery process look like?

  • After undergoing a thrombectomy, patients generally spend several hours in a recovery room where their vital signs are closely monitored.

  • Medications: Patients are often prescribed anticoagulants (blood thinners) to prevent any reformation of clots. Pain relief medications may also be provided as needed.

  • Activity Level: It is essential to get on one’s feet soon after surgery; however, patients should avoid strenuous activities for a designated period (often around three weeks)

  • Use of compression stockings is often recommended to reduce the risk of new clots forming.

Patients should be aware of the potential complications that can arise after a thrombectomy, which include:

  • Re-closure of the blood vessel due to the formation of new clots.

  • Excessive bleeding which may occur at the site of the procedure.

  • Infection at the incision site.

  • Pulmonary embolism if smaller clots break away and travel to the lungs.
