Prognosis
What is the prognosis?
-
Median survival time after video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) talc pleurodesis for MPE is approximately 10.5 months, with a range from a few days to over 5 years in selected cases.
-
Other studies report median survival after pleurodesis ranging from 3 to 12 months, commonly around 10 to 12 months
-
Presence of extrathoracic metastasis and duration of disease over 12 months also correlate with increased mortality risk, although these may vary in significance.
-
One-year survival rates after VATS talc pleurodesis are about 44%, with 3- and 5-year survival rates of roughly 10% and 2%, respectively.
What are the chances of a second surgery?
-
After video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) pleurodesis with blebectomy and pleurectomy for spontaneous pneumothorax, the long-term recurrence rate is around 6.0%.
-
Female gender and prolonged air leakage (>7 days postoperatively) significantly increase the risk of recurrence and subsequent surgery
