Lifestyle Changes

What are some lifestyle changes after a mitral valve repair?

  •  You may need to take 4 to 12 weeks off from work.

  • You may need to reduce salt, sugar, alcohol intake, and avoid processed foods, allowing the body to heal effectively

  • Some individuals may experience heightened emotions; crying easily or feelings of sadness that could last for up to a year are not uncommon

After mitral valve repair, specific medications may be necessary for the long term:

  •  Anticoagulants: For patients who have received a mechanical valve, long-term anticoagulation therapy, generally with blood thinners, is crucial to prevent blood clots. This is especially important as patients with mitral valve prosthetics are at a higher risk for thromboembolic events.

  • Diuretics: These medications, often referred to as "water pills," help reduce fluid retention in the body. They can be beneficial in managing symptoms associated with heart failure, especially if there was pre-existing heart dysfunction.

  • Antihypertensives: For patients who also have high blood pressure, antihypertensive medications may be prescribed to help manage blood pressure effectively and reduce strain on the heart. This is significant because high blood pressure can exacerbate mitral valve regurgitation.

  • Beta-blockers: These medications can be used to lower heart rate and help manage blood pressure, providing added protection for the heart after surgery. They may also help reduce the chances of arrhythmias, which can be a concern post-surgery.

• Patients are typically advised to have their first check-up six to eight weeks after surgery to evaluate their healing and adjust medications as necessary.
