Lung transplantation is a life-saving procedure recommended for patients with chronic, end-stage lung diseases that are unresponsive to maximal medical therapy or for which no effective treatments are available.
Several underlying conditions may necessitate a lung transplant, including:
-
Bronchiectasis: This condition causes damage to the airways, leading to their abnormal widening or the formation of pouches. This structural damage increases the risk of recurring infections and impairs lung function.
-
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): A group of lung and airway diseases, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, that obstruct airflow and make breathing increasingly difficult.
-
Cystic Fibrosis: A genetic disorder characterized by the production of thick, sticky mucus that clogs the airways, causing breathing difficulties and frequent infections.
-
Each of these conditions significantly impacts lung function, and when other treatments fail toprovide relief or halt progression, lung transplantation becomes a critical option.
